Petrol-engined vehicles generally use an ignition engine, so a relatively high vacuum pressure can be generated at the intake stubs, which can provide a sufficient source of vacuum for the vacuum-assisted braking system.

In the case of diesel powered vehicles, however, the engine is compression ignition so the same level of vacuum pressure cannot be provided at the intake stubs and a vacuum pump is required to provide a source of vacuum. There are also vehicles with engines designed to meet certain environmental requirements for vehicle emissions, which also require a vacuum pump to provide a sufficient source of vacuum to ensure that the vehicle can run properly.

The output of the vacuum pump is mainly the pressure generated by the power servo system. However, when the vacuum pump is not working properly, the hydraulic system can still be driven by human power to act as a booster
